Make your scrap tires save lives. Life rafts like this, standard equipment on American war planes that fly over stretches of open water, have saved the lives of many air crews. Men have been rescued after floating in them for weeks. The ten pounds of rubber in one of these vitally important rafts is about the amount of rubber in a worn automobile tire ready for scrapping

Jalopies for defense. Here are some of the parts stripped from junked automobiles in auto graveyards. These parts were removed from cars before they were sent to a scrap iron dealer, who will process them and ship them out to steel mills. Some of these parts will be resold, but the vast majority, whether sold or not, will eventually end up in the furnace of an open hearth steel mill. There it will be melted down and combined with virgin metals to provide the fine quality steel needed for defense production

Rubber reclamation. Rubber "spaghetti" from old tires. In the xylos process of reclaiming scrap in a Midwest plant, rubber is forced through a screen by a large worn screw, and bits of metal and fiber are removed. Ropy lengths of rubber, ready for the final refining operation, are extruded. Firestone

Rubber reclamation. Harvesting rubber from discarded tires. Scrap rubber, reclaimed by dissolving and washing out the fibrous materials in old casings, goes through the first refining process in a big Midwest plant. The cleaned, plasticized scrap passes through rolls which carry off dirt and foreign particles at the sides. The refined rubber is then gathered in sheets for further steps in the xylos process. Firestone

Old gates turned in for scrap. Soon to be added to the scrap pile is this huge wrought iron gate of the historic Friendship estate, Washington, D.C., which the government has taken over for a huge housing project. This is one of two large gates of the estate, which, along with a 400-foot iron fence, will add 40,000 pounds to the nation's scrap pile. Shown in the picture are, left to right: Robert C. Waldie, project manager, Defense Homes Corporation; Lessing J. Rosenwald, director, War Production Board (WPB) Conservation Division; Clifton E. Conservation of used material bears heavily on the progress of the defense program. From Western Electric's distributing houses used wire and cable is shipped to the Nassau Smelting and Refining Company, where its components are preserved and cast into ingots and billets that find their way back to industry again. At the Atlanta distributing house, a new battery-driven lift and dumptruck speeds the local conservation program
