Summary

The reaction used by Andrew N. Meldrum in 1908 to obtain the chemical 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxane-4,6-dione, today called "Meldrum's acid". It is a condensation reaction between acetone C3H6O (left) with malonic acid C3H4O4 (center) in acetic anhydride and sulfuric acid, to yield Meldrum's acid C6H8O4 (right) and one molecule of water H2O (not shown).
