Alois Senefelder, the inventor of lithography, introduced the subject of colored lithography in 1818. Printers in other countries, such as France and England, were also started producing color prints. The first American chromolithograph—a portrait of Reverend F. W. P. Greenwood—was created by William Sharp in 1840. Chromolithographs became so popular in American culture that the era has been labeled as "chromo civilization". During the Victorian times, chromolithographs populated children's and fine arts publications, as well as advertising art, in trade cards, labels, and posters. They were also used for advertisements, popular prints, and medical or scientific books.

AMERICAN RED CROSS in North Russia. A typical gorup of French, Americans, and Russians near the AMERICAN RED CROSS warehouse in Archangel. Here are great comrades, and both are prime favorites with the Russians. In this case, the crowd had gathered to help the children put on their skates for the first firm ice of the winter. It is worth noting that almost never does one see a Russian child with two skates. They seem prefectly contented if they have one skate, and they go sliding along on one leg, now and then giving themselves a little push with the other foot. In the center ofhte group is Yodvegi, a Russian girl whoe husband had died in the war, and who was a favorite with the American soldiers. "Americans are the finest people in the world", she repeatedly told the Americans in Russian, and the Americans, not understanding what she said but knowing it was a friendly and kind-hearted greeting, always nodded approval and showered little gifts in the little girl, who is seen at the edge of the picture, bucket in hand
