In this 1960 photograph, the seven original Mercury astronauts participate in U.S. Air Force survival training exercises at Stead Air Force Base in Nevada. Pictured from left to right are: L. Gordon Cooper, M. Scott Carpenter, John Glenn, Alan Shepard, Virgil I. Grissom, Walter Schirra and Donald K. Slayton. Portions of their clothing have been fashioned from parachute material, and all have grown beards from their time in the wilderness. The purpose of this training was to prepare astronauts in the event of an emergency or faulty landin

g in a remote area. Forty-five years ago today on May 24, 1962, Scott Carpenter went on to fly the second American manned orbital flight. He piloted his Aurora 7 spacecraft through three revolutions of the Earth, reaching a maximum altitude of 164 miles. The spacecraft landed in the Atlantic Ocean about 1,000 miles, about 1,609 kilometers, southeast of Cape Canaveral after the 4 hour, 54 minute flight. Image credit: NASA

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- A solar-powered sun oven is displayed on Earth Day at a Sustainability Fair hosted by NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The fair was held adjacent to the Pathfinder Fitness Trail across the street from the 525-foot-tall Vehicle Assembly Building in Launch Complex 39. Kennedy Earth Day events included booths by a dozen sustainable companies and environmental organizations, displays on organic gardening, recycling, sustainable materials, alternative fuels and wildlife, and test-drives of several alternative-fuel vehicles. In keeping with the national theme, "Green Cities," the fair provided employees with the opportunity to learn how to do their parts in securing a healthy and sustainable future for their cities and the planet. The space center's sustainability objective is to "promote, maintain and pioneer green practices in all aspects of our mission, striving to be an agency leader in everything we do." The STS-92 crew strides across the runway at KSC’s Shuttle Landing Facility, heading toward the aircraft that will take them back to Houston. They were at KSC for Crew Equipment Interface Test (CEIT) activities, looking over their mission payload and related equipment. From left are Mission Specialists Bill McArthur and Jeff Wisoff, Pilot Pam Melroy, Mission Specialist Michael Lopez-Alegria, Commander Brian Duffy and Mission Specialist Koichi Wakata, who is with the Japanese space agency. Not seen is Mission Specialist Leroy Chiao, who was also at KSC for the CEIT. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- On the NASA Causeway at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, a 40- by 70-foot activity tent chock full of LEGO bricks is ready to welcome children of all ages. There, they will have the opportunity to build their vision of the future with LEGO bricks, marking the beginning of a three-year Space Act Agreement between NASA and The LEGO Group. The partnership is meant to spark the interest of children in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). To commemorate the partnership, two small LEGO space shuttles will launch aboard space shuttle Discovery's STS-133 mission to the International Space Station and the company will release four NASA-inspired products in its LEGO CITY line next year. LEGO sets also will fly to the space station aboard Endeavour's STS-134 mission, and will be put together on orbit to demonstrate the challenges faced while building things in microgravity.
