In the lower grades theconstruction work in drawing constitutes anatural basis and preparation for the moreelaborate work of the sixth, seventh andeighth grades, which includes mechanicaldrawing, practical exercises in carpentry,and lessons in the use of woodworking tools.The accompanying table gives a suggestedcourse for the three upper grades. The first manualtraining school in the United States wasopened in Saint Louis in 1880, under thedirection of Doctor Calvin M. Woodward,as a dej^artment of Washington University.Such excellent results were obtained fromthis school that other large cities establishedsimilar schools, either as independent insti-tutions or as departments in existing highschools. The introduction of manual training intothe elementary schools began in 1882, in theDwight School of Boston. Progress, how-ever, was slow.
