Thereis more than one method of reckoning thearea and population of the great capital.What is known as Greater London—consist-ing of the eitj^, the administrative countyof London and numerous outlying villages—is a place of 7,251,358 inhabitants (censusof 1911), and covers an area of nearly 700square miles. It includes all the territorywithin a radius of about fourteen miles fromTrafalgar Square. Greater London, there-fore, is the largest municipality in the world. The part officially called the City of Lon-don, lying on the north bank of the river,covers slightly more than a square mile. Itis a separate municipality, having a civiccorporation of its own, at the head of whichis the lord mayor of London.
