Canal Street, the principalthoroughfare, is 200 feet wide; it runs fromthe river through nearly the entire length ofthe city, and divides the French quarter fromthe modern town. At right angles to CanalStreet is Saint Charles Street; they intersectin the heart of the business section. On SaintCharles are many of the finest residences ofNew Orleans.

The comparatively-new CityHall is possibly the most beautiful buildingin the city; it encroaches on the French quar-ter, and is modeled after a Greek temple onthe Ionic order. The custom house is ofgranite, but architecturally forbidding. Thelargest and most famous hotel is the SaintCharles, but the newest and most sumptuouslyfurnished is the tall Grunewald. At the edgeof the French quarter is the Monteleone, andoutside of the business section, nearer thegreat railroad stations is the De Soto. Nota-ble among other buildings are the CottonExchange, the Sugar Exchange, the postoffice, the Maison Blanche, the Liverpool,London & Globe, the Tulane-Newcomb, theMorris and the Hibernia. Education.
