But at the beginning of a year,half the people in the world say, I am go-ing to turn over a new leaf! meaning theyintend to behave themselves better in vari-ous respects. As a rule, leaves do not stayturned over. I know a great many littleboys who promised me to turn over a newleaf in regard to tearing their clothes andlosing their jack-knives, and bringingmud into the house on their boots, and lit-tle girls who were going to keep theirbureau drawers tidy and their buttonssewed on. But I havent seen much im-provement in most of them. Indeed, whatcan you expect of the children, when theparents set them the example? Why, thereis a man in this neighborhood who hasturned over a new leaf in the matter ofsmoking every year since 1868, and afterthe first week of each New Year he smokeslike a chimney all the rest of the year.
