Therefore Mainesvote is considered as a political barometer;there is a familiar saying that as Mainegoes, so goes the Union. Education. The town system of commonschools is in use, the town being the smallestunit for their administration. A state super-intendent of schools is appointed by the gov-ernor and council for a term of three years.A compulsory school law which covers theages of seven to fifteen is well enforced.
