hristopher Columbus in1492. The continent of North America wasfirst discovered by John Cabot in 1497, andthe New World was named after AmericusVespueius, who was the first to write a de-scription of it. During the sixteenth centurymany voyages of discovery were made by theSpanish, Portuguese, English and French.The Spaniards colonized Mexico and madeattempts to settle in what is now the south-ern part of the United States. The Frenchalso made attempts to settle on the coast ofthe United States and along the Saint Law-rence, but no permanent settlements wereestablished in these regions until the begin-ning of the seventeenth century, when theEnglish settled in Jamestown, Va., in 1607,and at Plymouth, Mass., in 1620. The Frenchmade their first settlement at Quebec in 1608.During the century following, the continentwas practically divided among Spain, GreatBritain and France, but in 1763, at the closeof the French and Indian wars, France cededher claim to Great Britain, and the continent

The latteris the logical method to employ, for acontinent is always divided into countriesand the countries still further sub-divided,in detail. In a gTeat land division of theimmensity of a continent we seek onlygeneral physical characteristics, and leavemore intimate study of peoples, govern-ments, industries, and the like until wereach in turn its various political divi-sions. In the foregoing pages thesesmaller divisions have been given due con-sideration. A satisfactory outline of North Amer-ica, or of any other continent, should in-clude every important physical featurein its boundaries, definitely named and ina general way located.
