They are, however, frozenwastes and of little importance. Surface and Drainage. North America isdivided into three great physiographic re-gions. These are the Appalachian highlandon the east, the Rocky Mountain highland onthe west, and the great central plain occupy-ing the vast interior of the continent and ex-tending from the Arctic Ocean to the Gulf ofMexico. The Appalachian highland con-sists of a low plateau containing severalranges of mountains, which under differentnames extend from the Gulf of Saint Law-rence in a southwesterly direction to withinabout 300 milss of the Gulf of Mexico. Theelevations in these mountains do not exceed6,700 feet, the height of Mount Mitchell, nearthe southern extremity of the range. MountWashington, in the White Mountains, is near-ly as high. The portion of this plainbordering on the ocean is low, but it is bor-dered inland by the Piedmont region, which ishigher and consists of rolling land terminat-ing in the foothills of the mountains. Thewestern slope of the Appalachians is roll-ing and gradual and terminates in the prairieregion of the great central plain. The Rocky Mountain region extends fromAlaska to the Istlmius of Panama, from whichpoint it continues as the Andean system inSouth America. The name Cordilleras isfrequently given to this entire mountain sys-tem, extending through both of the Ameri-can continents.
