The probate^judges are chosen at popular election for a.term of four years. The attorney-general iselected biennially by joint ballot of thelegislature. .Maines general elections are held in Oc-tober, and in all other states the general elec-tions are in November. Therefore Mainesvote is considered as a political barometer;there is a familiar saying that as Mainegoes, so goes the Union. Education. The town system of commonschools is in use, the town being the smallestunit for their administration. A state super-intendent of schools is appointed by the gov-ernor and council for a term of three years.A compulsory school law which covers theages of seven to fifteen is well enforced. It ranks thirty-fourth among the statesof the Union in population, and has anaverage density of about twenty-five in-habitants to the square mile. There are more Roman Catholics inMaine than Protestants, because of thenearness of the French Catholic districtsof Canada. The illiteracy among native whites inMaine is less than three per cent. The Indians living in Maine are sur-vivors of the Wawenoek, Penobscot andPassamaquoddy tribes. Maine spends more than $3,000,000 ayear in support of its public schools.
